Original acrylic on canvas / 24 x 36
A Seneca warrior “The keepers of the Western Door” to the Iroquois Confederacy, keeps a watchful eye on an English colonial survey team across the river. Maps of the western part of New York were quite poor and very inaccurate during the pre-revolutionary area. There were many survey companies working for large land speculators. These men had grand plans for the country once it was opened up to colonization. However there was a major problem with their plan…it was the ancestral home of the mighty Seneca nation backed by their powerful unified confederacy. This is a scene overlooking the deep gorge and upper falls of the Genesee River just downstream from present day Portageville.
